About / The Project
Phil's Music Status Report is a running archive of what I've been listening to, one playlist at a time, since the spring of 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Each playlist is a snapshot — a “status report” — of my listening habits at a particular moment, named for whatever was going on in the world (and in my head) at the time. What started as a way to mark time has turned into an ongoing project: five years and 33 playlists later, I'm still making them.
This site collects those original playlists along with some new ones. Using Exportify to pull detailed track metadata (genre tags, record labels, audio features, and more) out of Spotify, and Claude to sort through all of it, I went back through all 33 playlists and pulled out themed collections that had been hiding across years of “what am I listening to now” entries — everything on the ECM Records label, every free jazz track, every Frank Zappa and Mothers of Invention song, decade-specific genre cuts, and more.
